Cost & planning

What does an online shop cost? Architecture matters.

A reliable estimate needs more than a product count. Functions, data, integrations, design, content and the operating model shape the real effort.

Short answer: A reliable fixed price is impossible without a defined scope. The main cost drivers are functions, data, integrations, design, migration, content and ongoing operations — not product count alone.

Why generic shop prices are rarely reliable

A shop with 5,000 simple products can be technically easier than a shop with 200 configurable products, multiple pricing rules and three connected systems. Product count is therefore only one part of the workload.

Platform and operating model

WooCommerce, Shopify, Shopware or a headless Astro storefront have different development and operating models. The total cost includes not only implementation, but also hosting, platform fees, updates, extensions and ongoing maintenance.

Design and storefront

An existing design system or a mostly standard theme reduces effort. Custom product presentations, configurators or complex interactions require considerably more design, development and testing work.

Data and integrations

ERP, inventory, PIM, CRM, payment, shipping and marketplaces often influence the budget more than individual frontend pages. Every integration needs mapping, failure handling and testing.

Content, SEO and GEO

Category architecture, product data, guides, metadata, structured data and internal linking should not be left until the end. The more content that must be created or migrated, the greater the editorial and technical effort.

Migration and legacy data

A relaunch adds data transfer, URL mapping, redirects, historical SEO signals and integrations from the old system. That usually makes a migration more complex than a true greenfield build.

How a reliable estimate is created

Before estimating, we would define at least the target state, platform, functionality, data sources, integrations, content scope and launch requirements. The project can then be split into essential scope, desirable scope and later development stages.

Briefly describe the current setup, your goal and existing systems. We can then structure the most sensible next steps without forcing a platform decision too early.
